Reach Your Smile Goals with these Six Oral Hygiene Practices

You must practice proper oral care to enhance your smile and overall well-being. From teeth cleaning techniques to proper nutrition, Drs. Mircea Mitu and George D’Louhy at Family Dental Center in Manteca, California, give handy tips to help you achieve optimal dental health.

Oral hygiene tips for a confident, healthy smile

Our office believes dentistry isn’t just about dealing with dental concerns — we emphasize preventative dental care to ward off dental issues rather than wait to treat them. Preventive dentistry is cost-effective and saves you from oral pain and other discomforts.

Do you know the secret to a healthy, attractive smile? Follow the simple tips below as your golden ticket to oral hygiene success.

Brush like a boss

Brushing removes food debris and plaque from your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If you brush your teeth twice every day, congratulations! But are you doing it right? Follow the steps below to ensure you brush your teeth properly.

  • Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. If your budget allows, opt for an electric toothbrush because it’s more thorough
  • Use fluoride toothpaste for strong teeth
  • Brush your teeth with the right technique. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums. Use gentle, circular motions to brush your teeth for at least two minutes. Reach every tooth surface, and don’t forget the tongue
  • Remember to change your toothbrush every two to three months or when the bristles start to fray

Floss with finesse

Flossing is one of the most overlooked practices of oral hygiene. However, this oral practice is vital as brushing as it helps remove plaque and food debris between teeth. We recommend flossing daily, especially before bedtime.

Mouthwash matters

We recommend rinsing your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash, especially after meals. An oral rinse kills bad bacteria to keep bad breath, decay, and gum disease away from your mouth.

Mind your diet

Limit acidic and sugary foods to prevent enamel damage. Opt for calcium-rich foods to keep your teeth strong. Keep your mouth hydrated. Water helps wash away undesired acids, food debris, and harmful bacteria.

Kick out bad oral habits

Tobacco products increase the risk of gum disease, bad breath, and mouth cancer. Furthermore, avoid using your teeth to open packages or chew on hard substances like fingernails and ice. Lastly, protect your smile with a customized mouthguard if you play contact sports or are a chronic tooth grinder (bruxer).

Regular dental visits

Your oral hygiene regimen is never complete without regular dental exams. Bi-annual dental check-ups allow the dentist to inspect your oral health and treat issues before they worsen. Besides, we professionally clean your teeth during dental exams to remove plaque and tartar buildup.
